Description

Homer's Iliad 24 and the Judgement of Paris

The first official lecture of the 2013 Greek History & Cultural Seminar series will be presented by Professor Chris Mackie, Head of the School of Humanities Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and is titled: 'Homer's Iliad 24 and the Judgement of Paris'.

Professor Mackie’s paper looks at the single reference to the Judgement of Paris in the Iliad (24.25-30), and then considers references to other episodes associated with the Trojan saga.

The argument of the paper is that in the final book of the poem Homer consciously alludes to mythical episodes prior to the wrath of Achilles, and also those that take place after the funeral of Hector.

This seems to imply that the poet of the Iliad knew about all the various mythical episodes associated with the Epic Cycle (such as the judgement of Paris, the Wooden Horse, the rape of Cassandra, and the throwing of the boy Astyanax from the walls)
