“A slow-burning film that’s far from over when the lights go up.” Berlinale
Continuing the sparse, semi-abstract style of his previous work (Correction, 2007), filmmaker Thanos Anastopoulos creates a noir-like psychological thriller set in modern-day riot-stricken Athens.
14 year-old Myrto (Savina Alimani, in only her second role) takes matters into her own hands when her bankrupt father disappears to avoid paying debts. She abducts an eight year-old boy, Aggelos (Aggelos Papadimas, in his debut performance), and hides him in her father’s lumber workshop.
Thanks to stunning cinematography by Elias Adamis and electric performances from its two young lead actors, The Daughter is as claustrophobic visually as it is thematically – a telling tale of desperate measures for desperate times.
“Employs precise images and a protocol-like dramatic structure infused with thriller elements to portray a society whose key players flee their responsibilities.” Festival Scope
Festivals & Awards: Berlin International Film Festival 2013, Toronto International Film Festival 2013
