Greece’s Adonis of the small screen makes a remarkable leap to the big screen – as both actor and auteur – in this year’s Greek Film Festival Opening Night feature.
A romantic drama set in modern Athens against the backdrop of the economic crisis, What if... shows two opposing perspectives in a Sliding Doors style of storytelling: One of a bachelor; the other of a couple in love. Demetris (the film’s maker Christoforos Papakaliatis) shares his relatively normal life with a German Shepherd dog. When his canine friend begs to be walked one night, Demetris unwittingly stands on the precipice of a life-changing decision. If he goes out, he will meet Christina (Marina Kalogirou), the love of his life. If he stays at home, he will not.
To call Papakaliatis a ‘star’ is an understatement but this film – that went wild at the Greek box office – proves he’s also a huge talent with lots more to reveal.
About the Director:
Born and raised in Athens, Christoforos Papakaliatis is an instantly recognisable household name and much-admired star in Greece. Having appeared on TV since high school, the 38-year-old has starred, directed and written numerous top-rated and acclaimed television drama series. What if… is his feature film debut as both writer and director.
For our Greek speakers:
Πόσο μπορεί μία στιγμιαία απόφασή μας, να καθορίσει όλη μας τη ζωή; Αν ο Δημήτρης έβγαινε από το σπίτι του εκείνο το βράδυ θα γνώριζε τη Χριστίνα. Τον έρωτα της ζωής του. Ένας έρωτας θα γεννηθεί και θα φτάσει μέχρι και σήμερα. Θα αντέξει; Είναι ο έρωτας η απάντηση σε όλο αυτό που ζούμε; Πόσο επηρεάζει μία οικονομική κρίση και πόσο μπορεί να διαλύσει τη σχέση ενός ζευγαριού;
