A film noir case study, with all the charms and complexity of this much-loved genre.” Flix
With more than just a nod to the 1953 Fritz Lang classic The Big Heat, filmmaker Karolos Zonaras creates one of the most unique films of the 2013 Greek Film Festival – a noir ‘dead ringer’ with femme fatales, tough guys, pithy one-liners, long shadows and dramatic music stings.
Sergeant Aristide Kormas (Meletis Georgiadis) gets embroiled in a nightmarish adventure while investigating the suicide of a colleague. He soon discovers that organised crime and law enforcement are just two sides of the same coin. As the sergeant insightfully notes, “With the plot of this case, one could make a movie.”
Zonaras takes a post-modern approach to his reverence of the film noir genre with The Big Heat playing on strategically placed TV screens, and the actors artfully dubbed in voices other than their own.
About the Director:
Born in Athens, Karolos Zonaras studied Economics at the University of Piraeus and Cinema Studies in New York at NYU, until he attended the Centro Sperimentale in Rome where he lived for 13 years. Since 1999, Zonaras has been back in Athens, making commercials and documentaries. His first feature film was Charlie’s Son (2008).
