“The Pontian guerrilla movement during the Genocide” is the topic of the lecture to be presented by well-known poet and short story writer Dean Kalimnios, next Thursday 19 May, as a part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, offered for the sixth consecutive year by the Greek Community of Melbourne. This lecture is a joint event with Pontiaki Estia Melbourne.

Often portrayed as a Greek nationalist movement, Kalimnios will argue that the Pontian guerrilla movement was created as a survival mechanism in response to co-ordinated persecution by the Ottoman Empire, prior to World War I.

The reasons for that persecution, as well as the multifarious forms the guerrilla movement took prior to the treaty between Greece and Turkey will be examined during the course of the lecture.

Dean Kalimnios is also popular as Greek-Australian journalist and is well known for his column in the Melbourne Greek newspaper Neos Kosmos, entitled Diatribe, which has been running since 2001.

He has published six poetry collections and has also translated numerous works of prominent Greek-Australian authors from Greek into English. In November 2007, he was awarded a Government of Victoria Award for Excellence in Multicultural Affairs.
