Many friends of poetry had the unique opportunity to experience Dimitris Tsaloumas, the award winning Greek Australian poet recite his works on Sunday afternoon at the Greek Community Centre. The event in honour of the poet was organised by the Greek Australian Cultural League as part of the 2011 Antipodes Festival.
Over 100 attendees listened for over an hour to Dimitris Tsaloumas, the 89 year old poet, recite his works in Greek and English and reply to all questions directed to him by the audience. Finally, the poet discussed and shared many aspects of his poetic life with all those present.
The event was opened by Mrs. Cathy Alexopoulos (President of the Greek Australian Cultural League) and Mr. Bill Papastergiadis (President of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne & Victoria) welcomed all those present. Ms. Helen Nickas (academic and author) introduced Mr. Dimitris Tsaloumas and spoke about his life and works before officiating the events of the afternoon.
‘An afternoon of poetry with Dimitris Tsaloumas’ captivated many and in particular the English speaking audience who had the rare opportunity to listen to Tsaloumas recite his poetry in the English language.
Tsaloumas was awarded the National Book Council Award in 1983 and the Patrick White Award in 1994.
