The Greek Community of Melbourne in collaboration with the Eothinon Publications and the Workers Cultural League “Democritos” present the new book by George Michelakakis Hope in crisis, on Sunday 3 December 2017, at the Greek Centre.
The book will be launched by professor George Vasilakopoulos from the Department of Philosophy of the LaTrobe University.
Hope in crisis is a social and ideological history in post war Australia and through the study of the works of visual artists and poets addressing:
• The difference between culture and art; • The conflict of values between ethnic-state and forces of globalization; • The aesthetic differences between the first generations of immigrants and their children.
rawing on 90 colour photographs of visual art works and dozens of significant poetic works, the book offers an account of immigrant art in Australia during the period of globalization and the spread of relativist values.
From 1971, the author, himself a visual artist, came to know the world of immigrants as it developed through a period of rapid social and technological change that marked the end of one historical period and the advent of another.
