Synopsis
This lecture will explore the key attributes of one of the greatest assets of Modern Greece, The Hellenic Shipping Industry. It will provide an insightful and pragmatic approach to the subject offering facts and largely unknown details about the evolution and current state of Hellenic Shipping.
Firstly, George will provide a definition of what we mean by "shipping" noting the different market segments and their significance globally. What do we mean when we hear the phrase "The Greek shipping fleet is the largest in the world". Is it true? How has Greece, with such a small population, only 11m people which translates to 0.15% of the world's population managed to control approximately 16% of global cargo tonnage? Has it always been this way? What do Greek Shipowners know that has made them so successful?
We will embark on a brief journey of the last 2 centuries exploring the key eras that have distinguished Hellenic Shipping. Who were the key players? What were the hallmarks of each era? How has Hellenic Shipping evolved over time? What role did the Greek state play in the successes and failures of Hellenic Shipping?
Thereafter, we will explore the Hellenic Modern Shipping industry in more depth including its contribution to the Hellenic economy and its position on the global stage.
Finally, we will explore the challenges it currently faces and the opportunities that may lie ahead.
If you want to learn more about Hellenic Shipping, its evolution in recent times, its position and significance for Greece and globally, then join us for an hour of exploration, questions and answers on this exciting subject.
