Greek Precinct Illuminated

Mr Kotsiras: These lights herald the rejuvenation of Melbourne's historic Greek Precinct Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship Nicholas Kotsiras along with Lord Mayor of Melbourne Robert Doyle flicked the switch and shone the light on Melbourne's Greek Precinct. The Victorian Government contribution has equipped Lonsdale Street with new gateway lights marking the entry to the Greek Precinct and enhancing its identity.

The gateway complements markers in Melbourne's Chinese and Italian precincts also funded through the Cultural Precincts Enhancement Fund. The Victorian Government also contributed towards the Hellenic themed glass screens and awnings revitalising the area's iconic cafes and shops.

Turning on the lights: N. Kotsiras, Mr. Ong, J. Pantazopoulos, B. Papastergiadis and I. Karasavidis"These lights herald the rejuvenation of Melbourne's historic Greek Precinct while enhancing the outdoor dining experience and entertainment which generations of Victorians will continue to enjoy," Mr Kotsiras said.

"The new blue and white coloured lighting installation evoking the night sky's stars and the Greek flag also act as a beacon welcoming visitors to the Greek precinct," Mr Kotsiras said.

Mr Kotsiras said the Hellenic themed glass screens and awnings anchor the history of Greek settlement in the area, while enhancing the dining experience for visitors and locals.

Funding of $2 million under the Cultural Precincts Enhancement Fund was announced by the Victorian Government in May 2011 for the fit out of the Antipodes Centre for Greek Culture, Heritage and Language to be established in the Greek Precinct.

Under the lights

"The total precinct upgrade celebrates and recognises Victoria's migrant history and its impact on Melbourne's inner city development while shining a light on Australia as a successful multicultural nation," Mr Kotsiras said.

"The Victorian Government believes recognising and supporting the multicultural heritage of our diverse citizens - who helped build this state and nation - has led to a diverse yet unified and cohesive society." Mr Kotsiras said.
