“After my wife’s death… I felt I had to start a new life.”

One Step Ahead is a documentary odyssey into the ten weeks of the 2010 mayoral campaign of Thessaloniki – Greece’s second largest city. The man standing as Thessaloniki’s independent candidate is the unconventional Yiannis Boutaris; better known to Greeks as a winemaker and former alcoholic, although also honoured as an environmental activist and prominent civil citizen.

Through Dimitris Athyridis’ lens, we see the day-to-day grind of Boutaris’ campaign – his fight against the establishment and the Church, his daily yoga and quotidian rituals around the home, and his grief over the death of his wife – as the film builds to a neck-and-neck race on election day. Still, the essence of this documentary is far more than just politics; it’s about the enduring nature of love.

About the Director:
A multitalented Cinematographer, Producer and Screenwriter, Dimitris Athyridis’ recent foray into Documentary Filmmaking saw him explore the life of fallen rock star Terry Papadinas in T 4 Trouble and the Self Admiration Society (2009). One Step Ahead is his second documentary feature.
