“From the eyes of a nation to the mouth of madness.” Toronto International Film Festival
Actor Christos Stergioglou graduates from sadistic father in Dogtooth to yet another (arguably more accessible) entry in the ‘Greek Weird Wave’, The Eternal Return of Antonis Paraskevas, a self-assured debut from young filmmaker Elina Psykou.
As the titular character of Antonis – a veteran television host plagued by plummetting ratings – Stergioglou compellingly powers a narrative that riffs on celebrity culture as hero worship. Antonis stages his own kidnapping to revive the public’s flagging interest in him but quickly falls victim to boredom and delusion while holed up in an abandoned hotel.
“Starts out like an exercise in restrained comedy with a delicious side order of absurdity, only to carry on as an equally seductive psychological journey to the character’s personal tragedy.” Flix
Festivals & Awards: Berlin International Film Festival 2013, Toronto International Film Festival 2013
